If you do music, please read every word that follows. If you don't do music, this applies to you also. You never know who may cross your path or who you may meet. Network, Network, Network. Many people have most likely heard the saying "your network determines your net worth" or a slew of other statements that reiterate the importance of establishing a network in your field or area of expertise. Well, those statements are true. Whenever you watch a Tyler Perry production, do many of the actors/actresses look familiar? They should. He uses the same people and has done so for years. How many songs have Wayne, T-Pain, and Rick Ross done together? Too many to count. You may not be in the same circles as a Tyler Perry or T-Pain, so start your own. Seek out people who possess the same ambitions and drive as you. Nurture those relationships. Those same people may have contacts that can help further your career. Now it's time for my real life examples of the importance of networking, forming relationships, and not burning bridges.

About 4 or 5 years ago, I went to a recording studio in Atlanta with a group of my cousins. I think it was 2High Recording Studios or something like that. Only one of us had been there before and that particular cousin said a guy that goes by Kato has a studio in the building. We needed to record a couple of songs and didn't have alot of money to do so. If I remember correctly, I think Kato charged us $15 for two songs. You can't beat that and for him to do it on the low like that showed that he was in it for more than money. On another occasion, we dropped by the studio and Kato wasn't there, but one of his associates was...Brandon of the production team Nard and B (We didn't know that fact at the time). We didn't record any songs that day but Brandon played some of their beats for us and they had that heat and their signature sound way back then. Brandon told us he could work with us on the prices. Long story short, there was a small incident a month or so later (We blew it) and lets just say the bridges were burned with those guys. Nard and B are doing big things in Atlanta now and I can only imagine all the things we could have learned from those guys. Here's one of the songs we recorded:

Fast forward about 6 months in the same year. I found a studio in Gwinnett county that was decently priced and decided to purchase some studio time for my cousins. This time we called up a couple more people who came to town to go with us. I met a guy that went by Shawty Fatt from Gadsden. He told us about a dude he met from Eufaula (My hometown) while doing a bid. I actually grew up with the dude. Small world. He was also telling us about a white rapper named Yelawolf that he kicked it with. Anyway, we went to the studio and Shawty Fatt got on one of the songs. I never saw him after that day. Fast forward to today. Yelawolf is huge and I came across the picture below on the Supahot Beats blog. If I am not mistaken, Shawty Fatt is the guy to the far left. Yelawolf is the white guy. Need I say more?

Bama Boys Entertainment: What are some of the drawbacks to being a female artist in the male dominated rap game?

Hot Yella: I think the good in every situation out-weighs the bad, I try not to focus on problems- but rather the solutions. I do feel sometimes that I have to work harder, image-wise than a lot of male rappers as a lady, my hair, make-up, nails, heels, skin, jewelry all must all be on point. There are so many products that go into the beautification process, and it can be a long process! I am not saying that being a girl isn't amazing and a wonderful experience, but we definitely work harder on our image, so that's a little unequal in my opinion.

Bama Boys Entertainment: Has there ever been any specific situations that tested your desire to be a hip hop artist?

Hot Yella: I will always be creating music, it is not only a creative outlet and habit, but it's also my job and I'm not a quitter. I think the battles, situations and setbacks inspire me to strive for betterment as a hip-hop artist and personality. To me it's the 'tests' that make me want to study, and I want all A's!

Bama Boys Entertainment: What do you think has been the key(s) to Nicki Minaj's success?

Hot Yella: Her unique lyrical ability and delivery has a lot to do with her success. Also her image and style helped her become a female rap icon. Oh yeah...and her voices! She's very animated, different from most female emcees I've heard lately.

Bama Boys Entertainment: What emcee is the male version of you?

Hot Yella: I have been told Nas, Jay-Z, Fabolous, Eminem and even Pac. Personally, I cannot answer this question, I'd rather leave it up to the listener. I have a difficult time perceiving what I look like or sound like to others.

Bama Boys Entertainment: Finish the following sentence: In 2011, I will_ _ _ _ _ .

Hot Yella: ...continue with the same work ethic as December 31, 2010! I will wake up every morning of 2011 as I normally would--striving for mental clarity and strength, as well being focused on making musical strides.

Bama Boys Entertainment: What is the most personal song that you have written thus far? (briefly describe it's content).

Hot Yella: Each verse or song is a piece of me, I would be a traitor to one song if I said another was more or less me than the other. At this moment I would say my new single "Dream Too Much" is personal because it is a sneak peek into my mind. The content of the song is very playful much like myself, but it also has deep meanings about life and growing up as an artist and person. It's for young people, especially those who are misunderstood. I absolutely love this record and cannot wait for the world to hear it! Hot Yella: I like working with a variety of different producers, including up and coming producers. They too are hungry, talented and creative. I would not limit myself to only working with platinum selling producers just because they are a platinum selling. I would say one day a record with Swizz Beatz would be bananas thought, so I'll say, "Swizz, Let's talk beats!" ;)

Bama Boys Entertainment: What do you think it will take to get music to a place where all the regions in the U.S. are poppin' at the same time?

Hot Yella: Power to the people, as they say! I think its is up to the people to fall in love with an artist and their music--whatever type of regional genre or sound that entails, I really couldn't answer that. I'd just say it's up to the people to decide what's good music.

Bama Boys Entertainment: Where's the weirdest place you have ever performed?

Hot Yella: There is no such thing as a weird place to perform, the world is a sage! I can say performances that may be slightly awkward are when they happen during family BBQs or cookouts for example, when my family or friends want me to rap or sing for them. It's spontaneous, but I am always down to perform, it's my gift and I like to give!

Bama Boys Entertainment: Describe your creative process when writing a song.

Hot Yella: Concepts come out of the blue, at any moment I can become inspired. The key is being continuously inspired! I also listen to tracks when I'm writing because a hot record must have a hot beat. Also, when I am writing a song I prefer to be alone, in my own comfort zone, not forcing my thoughts or lyrics.

Bama Boys Entertainment: How has radio changed over the past 5 years?

Tonya "Beyonce" Clackum: I think it is actually more music driven. With Arbitron (a media and marketing research firm) changing from survey booklets to actual PPM (Portable People Meter), it has made stations far more music intensive.

Bama Boys Entertainment: What are your thoughts on the Performance Rights Act legislation?

Tonya "Beyonce" Clackum: Well, from my understanding and this side of the board, I do not feel as if it is a good thing. It is an additional tax on music that stations would have to pay to the artists and record labels. But the thing is, we already pay....And I think this additional charge could have a bad chain reaction.

Bama Boys Entertainment: What do you feel contributed to Soulja Boy's low sales numbers?

Tonya "Beyonce" Clackum: Not sure, I mean it is hard to read sales in today's market because are you looking at the big picture for all sales. Plus, I don't really feel as if he had a solid single out and there have been alot of really big albums dropping these past weeks.

Bama Boys Entertainment: Speak on your path to becoming a radio personality.

Tonya "Beyonce" Clackum: I was in High School in Marietta, GA and started an internship here at Hot 97.5 (before the name change) in 1998. Ryan Cameron gave me a shot as his intern/assistant in 2000 and of course came up with my moniker "Beyonce Alowishus I'm Sorry" because he said I kept messing up and saying "I'm Sorry." So, I then started doing my own on-air shifts over nights and on weekends. And then was a member of the A-Team Morning Show, and now currently with the Rickey Smiley Morning Show. Life is good. I have been beyond blessed in this industry and I am truly thankful for all of the amazing opportunities I have been blessed with here at Radio One. The A-Team was such an experience because we actually had to build and create our own show (Rashan Ali, CJ, Akini and Griff). But it was definitely fun times. Now, working with Rickey is amazing. You also have Ebony, Headkrack, Rock T, Special K, Gary with the T, Juicy , Hollywood, and Chica. Again, I can't be more thankful to work with such great people.

Bama Boys Entertainment: What song or album can you not go without listening to throughout the day?

Tonya "Beyonce" Clackum: Um, there is not a favorite song or artist for me, I love music. I am a big B.O.B supporter though. I really love his music. But I like everything from Hip Hop to Rock. I am a music lover.

Bama Boys Entertainment: Being into technology and gadgets, what is the hot item for this Christmas season?

Tonya "Beyonce" Clackum: 100 percent, the iPad and the Xbox Kinnect. I have the Kinnect and me and my younger sisters (12,16, and 20) play it all the time. It is a great family party game.

Bama Boys Entertainment: The radio play list can sometimes become repetitive. How can listeners get their favorite artists played that aren't as popular as say Rick Ross or T.I.?

Tonya "Beyonce" Clackum: Well, here at Hot we have a great programming team who actually meets with local artists and hold a DJ meeting weekly to find out what's hot in the clubs and do alot of research, which includes a database of daily requests that the listeners call in and request. We have actually broken alot of national artists here. If you think about it, Rick Ross and T.I. were first played here in Atlanta on Hot.

Bama Boys Entertainment: What has been your most enjoyable interview?

Tonya "Beyonce" Clackum: I have lucked up and had some pretty awesome interviews over the years. Suge Knight was an interesting one, Snoop was fun, T.I. always drops the bizz, But the most incredible was Barack Obama.

Bama Boys Entertainment: Emperor Searcy was recently awarded a community service award at the March of Dimes Achievement in Radio Awards. In what ways are other Hot 107.9 personalities involved in the community?

Tonya "Beyonce" Clackum: Well, everyone contributes alot of time and effort to the community in their own way. Some are heavy in the schools with various outreach programs and so fourth. And then as a team, we are also working on some kind of effort to give back whether it's bullying in our schools, Hosea Feed The Hungry, Toy Drives.... and more. But the community here is our top priority. We don't do it for recognition or accolades, we just genuinely want to do what ever we can to help those who need help.

Bama Boys Entertainment: At what age did you know that you wanted to pursue acting seriously?

Jeremy Brandon Carroll: I would say at age 15 is when it really hit me. I really wanted to be an actor in film. After watching The Color Purple one day it did something emotionally to me that sparked a fire in me for this industry. It made me want to be a part of something that is as special as that film is.

Bama Boys Entertainment: Do you work with an agent or do you pursue roles on your own?

Jeremy Brandon Carroll: I work with four different agents. I have one in Georgia, Alabama, Louisiana, North Carolina and Los Angeles. Even though I have agents, I have booked most of the work myself. I have really had to hustle and work my but off just to get this far. You really learn in this business, when it comes down to it that YOU ARE YOUR OWN AGENT. No one will look out for you better than you. You can't depend on too much of what people say in this business.

Bama Boys Entertainment: How does being from a small town help or hinder your acting career?

Jeremy Brandon Carroll: It hinders me when People here a southern accent. I have had to work with coaches to change it. Also people treat you like your stupid and all of the cliche things southerners deal with. I think being from a small town helps me because it keeps me very personal and REAL.

Bama Boys Entertainment: If you weren't an actor, what career path do you think you would have followed?

Jeremy Brandon Carroll: If I was not an actor, I would probably be a Meteorologist. Other than acting I have always loved to tell everyone weather reports and watch the weather. I am very fascinated with Mother Nature.

Bama Boys Entertainment: Who is the most influential person in your life?

Jeremy Brandon Carroll: I would have to say my mom. She has always been there for me and supported me in all of my auditions. Both my parents and family are very supportive, but she is just always that extra support that pushes me through. I put my faith in God and pray all the time and listen for the answers to guide me.

Bama Boys Entertainment: If you could co-star in a movie with any actor or actress, who would that be and why?

Jeremy Brandon Carroll: I would have to say Robin Williams. I think he is extremely talented and extraordinary. I mean he goes from Mrs. Doubtfire to One Hour Photo. The man is a genius! I have also listened to him in interviews and behind the scenes from his work. He seems to love his job and besides the AMAZING talent he has I really think he is a great guy. I look up to him as an actor.

Bama Boys Entertainment: What is one of the biggest misconceptions about Hollywood?

Jeremy Brandon Carroll: I would have to say MOST THINGS ARE FAKE. Relationships, Magazines, Reality shows and Looks. Most of what you see and hear has some shady publicist behind it that is generating popularity for their client. They will do whatever it takes to get their client in front of the media.
Popularity. Don't believe much of what you hear or see on TV.

Bama Boys Entertainment: How big of a role does music play in movies?

Jeremy Brandon Carroll: I think music plays a huge role. Most of the time soundtracks are what make movies. Take Footloose for example. Although that movie is great, even when a movie is bad and you hear a great song, you will remember that movie and want to see it again because of that. Music and film go hand in hand. In horror movies it's the score "MUSIC" that makes the scenes scary and nerve racking. I think it plays a vital role in film.

Bama Boys Entertainment: Is there any advice, books, or other materials you would recommend for individuals looking to get into acting?

Jeremy Brandon Carroll: Although there are many great books, I have not read many books that prepared me for what I have gone through. The best advice I will give is RESEARCH, RESEARCH. If you are serous about being an actor I would start off doing extra work, STAND-IN WORK in movies so you can be around a set and get to know the business hands on starting at the bottom. Do as much acting as you can even if it's free, to keep your self growing. Also, put yourself out there because you never know who you are going to meet and usually in this business it's being at the right place at the right time. NEVER EVER pay anyone unless they are getting you a job and are taking out of that pay. You should never have to pay an agent unless they have booked you worl. They don't make money UNLESS YOU MAKE MONEY so don't get scammed. There are many out there.

10 Reasons Why Your beats Are Whack!

1. The instruments or sound kits your using are not quality.

This is the case for a lot of amateur producers. The get so excited that they can make a beat and they don’t pay attention to the fact that the quality of their beat is horrible. Also, they don’t know how to get better sounds kits. Today getting quality sounds fx and kits is a lot easier than it used to be thanks to digital audio software and VSTs. Make sure you compare your beats on a sonic level with industry beats.

2. Your mix is bad.

Most producers don’t understand how to mix a beat properly. Most amateur music producers take this for granted. To do this you need to have a basic understanding of effects, volume, and panning. Do some research if these terms sound foreign.

3. The song structure doesn’t fit the song.

When you make a beat make sure you choose a song structure that compliments the arrangement. For starters find a song with a similar sound and mimic the song structure until you get used to how beats are structured.

4. If the melody in your beat is bad then your beat is bad.

The definition of melody is a sequence of pitches and durations. I usually come up with the melody in my head first then the rest of the beat flows.

5. The timing and/or rhythm is off.

Quantize will usually help you with this.

6. The sound quality is not good.

Make sure you have decent headphones or monitor speakers when making your tracks. Also make sure you listen to your tracks in different sound systems and environments so that you have an idea how other listeners will here your beats. I put my beats on my IPod, in my car, and my home stereo at least before I let someone else hear them. You don’t have to go to that extreme, just make sure you try different speakers.

7. Your production style sounds to much like another producers.

Its okay to mimic and be inspired by another but its not okay to copy. If you do this people will let you know instantly that your beats are not original. You will get no where this way. Use sounds that you haven’t heard before or create your own.

8. The beat is not made for an artist.

This is not always a problem but it does happen. Some beats are just not made for a person to perform over. If your trying to get a beat placed with an artist, you must make sure that beat fits that artist. If you don’t want an artist to perform on your beats don’t worry about it you can always pitch it to radio or movies.

9. Your beat has no variation or change ups.

In order to keep the listener engaged into your beat, you must add some level of variation. A good example of this is the tracks the artist Beck uses.

10. You don’t have enough practice making beats.

Make more beats and you will get better. Repetition is the father of learning. Don’t expect to be great over night.

Bama Boys Entertainment: In your opinion, who is the most influential executive in the music industry right now?

Stess The Emcee: I really can't say who the most influential is. Sure you got guys like L.A. Reid running Def Jam, but when’s the last time Def Jam was truly a trendsetter? Jay-Z is definately an influence, so he’d be up there. Snoop went over to head urban music at Priority, but he hasn’t made a lot of noise. I do give him props for showing so much of the back catalog at Priority love. Akon got T-pain and Lady Gaga on his roster. Usher scooped up Justin Beiber thanks to Scooter Braun. It's hard to say. What I can say is Steve Rifkin at Loud and SRC, and Dru Ha and Buckshot over at Duckdown are probably the biggest influneces on me.

Bama Boys Entertainment: We always talk about real hip hop, but do you think real R & B will make a comeback?

Stess The Emcee: Real R & B really didn’t go anywhere. It’s just, in black music it tends to get real “pop” real quick. And everyone remains focused on what ever’s popular. So it seems gone, but there is a lot of talent, they just don’t get a lot of attention. Look at the album that John Legend just dropped with the Roots. Melanie Fiona dropped an amazing album last year. Hell even Phil Colins said his last album will be the one he’s about to drop, and it’s got a lot of Motown cover songs. Hell even El Debarge is back!

Bama Boys Entertainment: What are some of the reasons why Eminem received 10 grammy nominations?

Stess The Emcee: Eminem made a great album plain and simple. He changed up what he normally does, and worked outside his normal box. Recovery is dope. And also he’s received the grammy for best rap album for every major solo album he has released.

Bama Boys Entertainment: Is the strip club really the best way to get your song to jump off?

Stess The Emcee: Its one of many, but not the best. Woman are the best way to get your music going. Women dictate trends like you wouldn’t believe. Hell even Biggie did R and B Radio friendly stuff, and he became a sex symbol.

Bama Boys Entertainment: What are your thoughts on the Lil Kim, Nicki Minaj situation?

Stess The Emcee: I don’t care for rapper beef at all. Point blank. I don’t care what rappers have to say in interviews, I just want dope music. If beef is the subject matter, that’s fine, but if you’re going to beef on wax, im going to need you to make one dope ass record, if not, then you are just wasting everyone’s time.

Bama Boys Entertainment: Which unsigned artists are you feeling right now?

Stess The Emcee: Nikki Lynette is dope, Joell Ortiz is a free agent now, here in Tallahassee we have Jube, M Beezy, Kim D, Rufat, and After the Smoke. My homey P Pluck still doing his thing. I recently been playing a lot of Childish Gambino, Chiddy Bang just signed and they’re dope, um is Al B Back signed yet? He always drops dope stuff. I was listening to A Cool Stick a lot, for a while there. Kevin Knottingham posts a lot of dope unsigned music on his blog. Not sure if these folks are signed but Chip The Ripper, Tom Hardy, Tabi Bonney, Vado, The Kid Daytona, Laws, Shawn Chrystopher, Emilio Rojas (and on and on and on).

Bama Boys Entertainment: Travis Porter recently signed to Jive records. In an interview, I heard them say they turned down Bad Boy. You think there's any truth to that statement?

Stess The Emcee: Im not sure. But I do feel they should have stayed independent.

Bama Boys Entertainment: Which artist(s) would you like to see make a comeback in 2011?

Stess The Emcee: I want to see the Fugees put everything behind them and drop something incredible. Ego’s and money is such a funny thing. But it’s an album that Hip Hop needs. I get kind of disgusted at artists sometimes when they are being selfish. Just think about the first time you heard The Score. How amazing it was. These kids need the Fugees to return. We all do.

Bama Boys Entertainment: Does 106 and Park need to be cancelled?

Stess The Emcee: No but it needs to be fixed. It’s a great outlet and I understand it has a target audience. But BET needs to show some responsibility to its viewers. And not just 106th and Park, but in all programming on that network. And who do I need to talk to, in order to get Rap City back on?

Bama Boys Entertainment: What is your all time favorite hip hop lyric or line?

Stess The Emcee: Too many to name. Inspectah Deck killed the first verse on Wu-Tang’s “Triumph”, Prodigy’s first verse on “Quiet Storm” is classic to me, Eminem’s first verse on “I Don’t Give A Fuck”, Dead Prez whole “Hip Hop” record is insane, Biggie on “Long Kiss Goodnight”, Pharaoh Monch always goes in. I really don’t have a favorite.

Not So Good Things I Noticed About The Music Industry

I would consider myself a part of the music industry...loosely. I make beats but it's not the way I make a living. For those of you who are trying and haven't quite made it yet, I want to share some things I've experienced and some things to be prepared for. First, you must develop thick skin. You are going to have bad days when people say your music sucks. You are going to have days when you want to quit. If you put your heart and soul into your product and you stand behind it 100%, keep pushing. The music industry is saturated with artists, producers, and managers so you have to do whatever it takes to stand out. Don't be afraid to stick out like a sore thumb. The whole landscape of music has changed and most of the shot callers are in it for themselves. They want to make as much money off you as they possibly can so you should develop the same mentality. They don't put alot of money behind your music. Don't expect follow-up conversations. If you get a meeting with a label, company, etc, don't leave that meeting without signing some type of deal, agreement, contract, or something that guarantees some type of business transaction will happen. If you have a bonafide hot record, work it in the streets yourself. Take it to the strip clubs. Take it to the regular clubs. Most radio stations now play unsigned artists on a regular basis. Do your homework. Pass it out at music conferences. Get the point? Make the record execs seek you out. You will have more barganing power that way. Reverend Run said your network determines your net worth. That is so true in the music industry. If you are not a part of the right circle of people, you will not be presented with the same opportunities as someone one who is. Friends give work to friends. So don't expect alot from people. But be ready when opportunities arise and be prepared to create your own.

I still consider myself new at beat making and I am absorbing everything possible to get better. I read books, I scour the internet, and most of all I listen to alot of music of different varieties. I am always saying that certain songs sound alike and I just put two and two together. It's the chords. I want to begin using more chords in my compositions but at first I felt as if learning chords would be a hugely challenging task until I saw this video. They guy is playing minor chords and points out that alot of songs use the same chords. Now the light bulb is coming on over my head...I can learn one chord progression at a time and make several songs before I move on to learning the next chord. Might not mean much to seasoned producers but for those just starting out, learning some minor chords might give them a boost of confidence in their production skills.

The site focuses mainly on the FL Studio product(formerly known as Fruity Loops). There are how-to videos, there are forums where you can discuss any music related topic, there is a section for beat battles, a section to give and receive feedback on your beats, and a host of other usueful information. I personally have downloaded tons of sounds/kits from the download area. This site is worth visiting...and the kicker...I would estimate that about 85% of the content is FREE.

Shawty Redd catches a murder charge!!

McDONOUGH, Ga. – Music producer Demetrius Lee Stewart, known as Shawty Redd, is being held in a suburban Atlanta jail on a murder charge.

Henry County Police Capt. Jason Bolton says Stewart was arrested Friday morning.

Stewart is accused of shooting 35-year-old Damon A. Martin of Detroit in an argument at Stewart's home in Hampton, about 30 miles southeast of Atlanta.

The 28-year-old Stewart is charged with murder and was being held without bond in the Henry County jail Saturday. His first court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 12. Police didn't know whether Stewart has a lawyer.

Stewart has worked with Young Jeezy, Snoop Dogg and other major artists.

10 Things to Do Immediately After a Networking Event

The true color of networking is often revealed after the event itself. The emails that get traded, the connections we make, and the relationships that continue to grow. Here are 10 things to do immediately after attending a networking function (conferences, seminars, business clubs).

1) Send email. Don’t wait for the next day or the next week. Chances are you won’t get around to it-and even if you do-they may not recall. Send an email to everyone you took a card from. Even if you don’t see an immediate connection, just say thanks.

2) Connect on Facebook. My favorite strategy. I look the people up on Facebook using their business cards and add them to my network. Now, I know their birthdays, their occupation, and their day to day status (literally!). Best Rolodex in the world.

3) Put one thing into action. Too many people walk away from networking events feeling good, but doing nothing. Take one decisive action from what you learned.

4) Introduce two people to each other. One of my colleagues, Jim Penny, is a master at this. He finds one person at each event and introduces them to someone else he thinks they should know. Now, where those two people take the relationship is up to them, but he is always remembered as the guy who made the introduction!

5) Contact one PRP (Potential Referral Partner). One of the best ways to grow a business is through collaboration with others. Joint ventures can be amazingly powerful. Whenever I network, I try to seek out one referral partner. This can be someone that I can send business to or someone whose clients we can help. The best PRPs are those who can figure out a win-win situation. Example: A web designer sends a printer work, while a printer recommends the designer to their clients.

6) If you took pictures, put them up on Facebook. Tag them whenever possible. Pictures are best posted when the memory of the event is still fresh. If you follow #2, then you can also tag people you have added as friends. Pictures are a great way to attract people to your profile as well.

7) Blog or write about your experience. Whenever I come back from events, my mind is spinning with new ideas. If I don’t get them down, they are lost. Bullet point ideas or write them across your white board. Just get them down!

8) Make sure your website is working well. If you met a lot of people, the chances are that they will check out your website. Make sure that it is up to date and a good representation of who you are.

9) Thank the host – if applicable. This especially applies to local events which are put together by one individual. A quick note thanking them will go a long way.

10) Check networking supplies. Yes, check your stock of cool business cards, pens, and stickers after your event – and before the next one. I can’t tell you how many times I have had to order cards overnite before I learned this lesson. Check your stock after each event, and you will thank yourself later!

Despite reports earlier today (October 6) that Shyne was freed from prison, MTV News has learned that the Belize-born rapper is being detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs, due to his questionable status as a American citizen.

The 30-year-old rapper, who was scheduled to be released today, has spent nearly a decade of his life in both the Clinton and Woodburne Correctional facilites in upstate New York. He is now in an undisclosed facility in Western New York awaiting to see if he will be deported.

Po was serving time on assault, reckless endangerment and gun possession charges for an incident that occurred in December ‘99. While partying at Club New York in Manhattan with then label boss Diddy and Jennifer Lopez—Puffy’s girlfriend at the time—Shyne got involved in a shootout, leaving three people injured.

He was sentenced on June 1, 2001 to ten years. Diddy, who was also charged in the crime, was acquitted.

US Money Laced With Cocaine

(Aug. 17) - Traces of cocaine taint up to 90 percent of paper money in the United States, a new study finds.
A group of scientists tested banknotes from more than 30 cities in five countries, including the United States, Canada, Brazil, China, and Japan, and found "alarming" evidence of cocaine use in many areas.

U.S. and Canadian currency had the highest levels, with an average contamination rate of between 85 and 90 percent, while Chinese and Japanese currency had the lowest, between 12 and 20 percent contamination.
The findings were presented yesterday at the 238th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in Washington, D.C.

Study leader Yuegang Zuo of the University of Massachusetts in Dartmouth said that the high percentage of contaminated U.S. currency observed in the current study represents nearly a 20 percent jump in comparison to a similar study he conducted two years ago.

"To my surprise, we're finding more and more cocaine in banknotes," Zuo said.
Scientists have known for years that paper money can become contaminated with cocaine during drug deals and directly through drug use, such as snorting cocaine through rolled bills. Contamination can also spread to banknotes not involved in the illicit drug culture, because bills are processed in banks' currency-counting machines.

"I'm not sure why we've seen this apparent increase, but it could be related to the economic downturn, with stressed people turning to cocaine," Zuo said.
Such studies are useful, he noted, because the data can help law enforcement agencies and forensic specialists identify patterns of drug use in a community.
Previous studies that have reported on cocaine traces on money have had several drawbacks, Zuo said. Some only sampled a small number of bills, while others destroyed the money in the process of testing.

Zuo and his colleagues used a modified instrument that allowed for faster, simpler and more accurate measurement of cocaine contamination than other methods, without destroying the currency.

The amounts of cocaine found on U.S. bills ranged from .006 micrograms (several thousands of times smaller than a single grain of sand) to more than 1,240 micrograms of cocaine per banknote (about 50 grains of sand).

The scientists found that larger cities like Baltimore, Boston, and Detroit had among the highest average cocaine levels. Washington, D.C., ranked above the average, with 95 percent of the banknotes sampled contaminated with the drug. The lowest average cocaine levels in U.S. currency appeared on bills collected from Salt Lake City.

Despite the high percentage of cocaine-contaminated banknotes, Zuo points out that the amount of cocaine found on most notes was so small that consumers should not have any health or legal concerns about handling paper money.
"For the most part, you can't get high by sniffing a regular banknote, unless it was used directly in drug uptake or during a drug exchange," Zuo said. "It also won't affect your health and is unlikely to interfere with blood and urine tests used for drug detection.

6 Songs in 3 Hours

This weekend my artist Jean Batiste and I had a scheduled 4 hour studio session. We did 6 songs in the first 3 hours and left the 4th hour open for the engineer to do a quick mix on the songs and do whatever else he needed to do. The significance of this story? Basically this is a lesson for artists that may be going into a studio for the first time and for those artists who think studio time is all fun and games. Forget about the Youtube videos you see where artists are buggin' out in the studio, drinking, etc. Those dudes have money to reserve a studio for a month so they can do whatever. If you are the average (broke) artist, you can't. With this said, I have come up with a few tips that may help you use your studio time wisely.

1. Only go to the studio with essential people. Artist, producer, and maybe the manager. The more people the more distracting things can become for yourself and the engineer.

2. Memorize your songs. Cuts down on the number of takes.

3. Go straight through the recording process. Have songs mixed and bounced at the end of the session.

Although this list is not extensive, every little bit helps. So now check out one of the "6 In 3" tracks we are working on.

I give it points for not being close to what everybody expected and points for the unique basketball outfits and the thinly veiled sexual innuendos. Update on ATL Rapper Dolla Murder

The lawyer for the alleged killer of Atlanta rapper Dolla said surveillance footage from the mall where Monday’s shooting occurred will prove his client’s innocence.

Los Angeles attorney Howard Price said Aubrey Berry, of Snellville, was acting in self-defense when he shot Dolla repeatedly with a 9 mm handgun.

“He believed [Dolla] was armed,” said Price, who alleges Berry was followed to the scene of the shooting by the victim. According to Los Angeles police, Dolla, born Roderick Anthony Burton II, was unarmed. Price insists it’s coincidental that the two men flew to the same city and ate at the same restaurant (P.F. Chang’s China Bistro) on the same date and time.

“He [Berry] was there [at P.F. Chang’s] first,” said Price, who has not yet seen the surveillance videos. Berry, a music promoter, was dining with associates when he encountered Dolla in the restaurant’s bathroom, the lawyer said.

There, “a threat was made” by the rapper, Price said. Berry’s associates told him he should leave because of Dolla’s affiliation with the Crips street gang, he said.

As his client waited for his car in the Beverly Center’s valet area, Dolla and his cousin, Wilbert Robinson, and another friend, Sidiq Abawi, confronted Berry, Price said.

“He [Berry] believed he was in danger,” the lawyer said.

Berry responded with a flurry of bullets, hitting Dolla multiple times in the back.

The shooting stems from an altercation roughly two weeks earlier at an Atlanta strip club, Platinum 21, Price said.

“Mr. Berry inadvertently bumped into a woman he didn’t know,” the lawyer said. The woman’s identity is unknown. “It was a stupid, silly incident that should’ve never escalated to this point.”

Dolla’s stepfather, George Viera, said the rapper was in Los Angeles planning a birthday party for his longtime girlfriend, Crystal Jackson. In a case full of alleged coincidences, here’s another: Jackson, Viera said, attends Clark Atlanta University. Berry recently graduated from Clark, according to a Los Angeles County deputy district attorney prosecuting the case.

What let's me know a song is a hit...the song's ingredients. Check out this example. Take Ne-Yo's song "So Sick". It didn't sound like anything on the radio at that time. The production was different and the lyrics were unique. The song also appealed to women. Can't go wrong with that. I don't think Ne-Yo set out to create something similar to the millions of cookie cutter songs out there. He didn't fall into the "I want a song like Joe Smoe" mode that most artists give in to. I guess the point of this post is to say that the music industry lacks creativity as a whole. Who wants to buy music if every song sounds the same. I also think that many of the established and big artists in the game will fall off if they don't change their recipe. Ok, you sold millions in the past but if you become predictable, fans will stop buying your music. Eminem has a formula. Rick Ross has a formula. Ja Rule had a formula. I expected Eminem's new record, "We Made You". This song takes shots at people and is radio friendly, not to mention a funny video. He is following his normal formula. His next single will probably be something serious or dark like "Stan". If that works, ride it until the wheels fall off. But don't get stuck like Ja Rule...he can't put the wheels back on. I'm not saying anything is wrong with this but how long will the fans stick around. I feel that artists should mix it up a little. Lil Wayne is doing rock. The fans will check this out even if it's out of curiosity. Kanye's recent album was different. Most of 2Pac's albums were different than the previous one. Get the picture.

As of lately, I have read alot of articles in which individuals give their top 5 MCs of all time, their top 10 producers, etc. So I decided to do a list of my own. It's not the top anything but I have compiled a list of songs that may not be on anyone's top lists, but songs that I feel move me the most, songs that inspire me, and songs that you can ride to, smoke out to, and function as the perfect soundtrack to any house party or summertime cook out. There are so many music related sites on the internet that I stopped counting. You can sell your beats online, you can upload your music, and the list goes on and on. I am going to talk about three such sites that I actively visit the most.

1. PMP Worldwide (www.pmpworldwide.com)- This site allows you to post your beats and then you can submit your beats to upcoming projects for various artists. I submiited beats to Lil Scrappy, Diddy, and Playaz Circle to name a few. I have also been contacted by unsigned artists looking for production and contacted to submit to a couple of mixtapes. They also have a section for writers. The site is not free but its well worth the money in my opinion. There is a wealth of music industry information on the site.

2. Sonicbids (www.sonicbids.com) - This site helps you find gigs, submit music to music conferences and festivals, and enter different contests. You can sign up to be notified by email when a gig meets your predetermined criteria. This site is also not free but they do offer a free trial month.

3. Roc Battle (www.rocbattle.com) - This site was created by legendary producer Rockwilder. You can sell your beats and you can also battle your beats against other producers for money or bragging rights. The site offers a free account as well as a paid subscription. I have even purchased beats on this site. There are some really good producers here.

I'll Take The Bologna Sandwich

I was just thinking back to the Temptations movie I have watched about 20 times. I remember a scene where the "Motown machine" was trying to write a hit for the Temptations. Once the song was completed, Barry Gordy asked his team if they would spend their last dollar to buy the song or spend their last dollar on a sandwich. If you are familiar with the music put out by Motown, then it's safe to say the song beat the sandwich quite often. Fast forward to today. I wonder how many labels today strive to make music in a similar fashion. Probably very few. Maybe a sandwich formula or gas formula is what we need to help get music to a more enjoyable state. I think I will go out and by a hybrid to free up some money when there is music I want to purchase. Can't spend my last dollar on this bull we call music.

Throw The Book At 'Em!

There is a lot to learn in the music industry, but where are you going to get that knowledge? There are some colleges that teach the “music business” as a part of their curriculum, but the majority of us probably don’t have time to attend classes and the subject matter may not be as specific as we require. Unless you have relationships with established individuals in the industry whom you can learn from, you have to find an alternate means to get yourself up to speed on the ins and outs of the music business. I have turned to reading books related to the music industry. They have a wealth of information. If one book doesn’t answer your questions, another one will. Nothing beats real world knowledge and experience, but books can be a necessary supplement. With that said, I have compiled a list of books that have given me insight on all areas of the music business. I must admit that I’m not a big reader, but I couldn’t put these books down.

Music Conference 101

I have attended my fair share of music conferences and they can be a gold mine or a waste of time; it’s up to you. The music conference that I have attended most often in the Atlanta area is the Atlantis Music Conference. I also attended the Radio One Music Conference last year. For the most part, these conferences allow individuals who are looking to make it in the music industry an opportunity to meet and interact with those already established inthe music industry. Music conferences are based upon panels. Loosely, a panel is a group of “experts” on a specificsubject who lend their knowledge and answer questions. Panel guests have included DJ Toomp, Khao, Bangladesh,Brian Cox, Adonis, Young Joc, Gorilla Zoe, Polo Da Don, DJ Unk, and the list goes on. The Atlantis Music Conferencealso gives new artists the opportunity to perform in showcases around the city over a three day period. As an artist looking for exposure, this is the part of the conference you should want to be a part of.

I have compiled a list of things to do to maximize the time you spend attending music conferences. These are just suggestions.

1. Arrive Early, Leave Late - The more time you spend at a music conference, the more time you have to mix and mingle.
2. Network, Network, Network - Take the time to introduce yourself and meet as many people as you can. There are also lawyers,filmmakers, clothing designers, etc. that are just starting out just like yourself. No better way to start your own network.
3. Advertise – Have CDs, t-shirts, flyers, postcards, and business cards made up to represent you, your artist, or your company.
4. Perform – If the music conference offers the opportunity for you to perform, take advantage. You never know who may see you.
5. Ask Questions – The panel sessions allow you to present questions to the panel guests. Ask intelligent questions that will help further your career.These question and answer sessions are not intended for self-promotion or to ask the panelists if you can give them your demo. Be considerate of others.
6. Video – Video tape the panels if you are allowed to do so. You will be surprised how much information you miss.

Are your MP3s up to par?

I have a few useful suggestions for MP3s that you plan on emailing to DJs, labels, etc. First, make sure the quality of your music is the best it can possibly be. If you can afford to get it mastered, by all means, get it mastered. If not, get it mixed as best you can. Secondly, add an image to your MP3. Open the song in iTunes. Right click on it and select Get Info. Select the Artwork tab and upload your photo. When your song is played on an ipod, in iTunes, or Windows Media player, your photo will appear while the song is being played. This helps the listener attach a face to the music. Lastly, make sure the bitrate of the song is at least 192 kbps. All of these suggestions were provided to me first hand by established Atlanta DJs and producers during multiple music conferences that I attended in 2008. Stay tuned for more gems.
